Health & Safety: Gas Hazards and Properties

Empowerment Through Knowledge

Giving you the knowledge and tools you need to understand the key properties and hazards of various industrial gases so they can be transported, stored, handled and used safely

Safe Handling Starts with Knowledge

The first step to safety lies in knowledge and awareness. And because safety is a number one priority at Linde, we are committed to sharing the in-depth and hands-on understanding of gas properties and hazards that we have gained over the decades with our customers and partners. We believe that sharing these insights can play a key role in achieving our aim of Zero Today in the transport, storage, handling and usage of industrial gases.

Positive Action

One of the key ways we contribute to safety is through our safety data sheets. We encourage anyone in contact with gases to read the corresponding data sheet before they handle cylinders and make sure they understand the key properties of the gas or gases in question.

Visit your local site to see the safety data sheets relevant for your region.

Clear labelling is another key source of information - cylinders with damaged or missing labels should never be used. To supplement this information, we have created an easy-to-follow “Gas Hazards & Properties” video. In particular, it emphasizes the following safety precautions:

  1. Store gases in well-ventilated areas if possible
  2. Install gas detectors in areas where gases may vent and collect as many gases are colorless and odorless
  3. Remember that gases with densities lower than air will rise and collect at the highest point
  4. Similarly, be aware that gases with densities higher than air will fall and collect in low-lying areas
  5. Be alert to the risk of asphyxiation as people are not aware of dangerously low oxygen levels
  6. Even a slight rise in the oxygen concentration of the atmosphere greatly increases the risk and intensity of a fire
  7. Flammable gases can burn or explode if they come into contact with an ignition source

Training Matters

Anyone who comes into contact with gas cylinders should receive suitable up-front training so they know and understand the properties and hazards of the respective gases and know how to respond in the event of an emergency. This training should be refreshed at regular intervals so operatives who use and handle gases can stay abreast of the latest regulatory changes. To support and reinforce awareness around gas properties and hazards, we have also created videos that take a close look at:

  • Transporting Gas Cylinders
  • Handling Gas Cylinders & Cylinder Care

Do not hesitate to contact your  local Linde representative or your gases supplier if you have any questions or would welcome advice on the latest legislative updates or local guidelines on gas handling and transportation.
